Not sure why this hasn't received good press. The adaptation is remarkable considering the book is mostly an exchange of emails. There's a clever nod to that in speech-to-text exchanges between Bernadette and her "assistant." Otherwise, the biggest switch is the focus on Bernadette herself -- here, her story plays center stage and Cate Blanchett does a stunning job bringing all her nuances to life. The book is quirky, so it shouldn't be surprising that the movie is bizarre, too. It's not the typical story you see on screen, but amid the weirdness there's a raw realness that lingers in an affecting way. And for those who've read the book, there's some hilarious satisfying scenes it's enjoyable to see unfold (mud slide anyone?).
