The new Dr. Who series is the worst ever. The blame has to be laid squarely on the writer, Chibney, who gives us sappy, uninspired stories. Jodie Whitaker could have been better if she had better scripts to deal with. Loved her in Broadchurch. The other problem is the "companions". At first, it seemed that the woman police officer was a good character, but nothing has developed there. The "old guy" is a terrible actor - no depth at all. Ryan is one-dimensional. The female companion is O.K. but she isn't given much to do. Too bad the grandmother was killed off - she would have been better than the old guy. The "Christmas" special was a disappointment. Too much time spent on Ryan and his absent father - sappy to the extreme - also unrealistic. The so-called plot line with the Dalek was completely derivative. How many times do we see aliens take over humans to dominate the earth? All the time. It's not even the earth, it's an insignificant city in northern England. The point is - the plots are very localized, the actors all have the same accents - even the doctor - and none of them stand out. I found that I didn't care about any of them - hoping maybe that the writer might kill off a couple. As if that wasn't bad enough, three more characters were brought into the Tardis for the special - a bit crowded. Whitaker seems to run around spouting nonsense - at least with other doctors we got some basic technical explanations and they did seem to be rational. It's too bad she is being relegated to the sidelines (seems to get lost in the crowd) since she is after all the first female doctor, and it would be nice to have her portrayed as a knowledgeable and in-charge character. And - perhaps the most important criticism - there are too many companions. The writer seems to feel that he has to give a sub-plot about each one. That's fine if you have one (or two at the most) but this just confuses and takes away from the action and the plot. Honestly, I did watch the entire special - to give it a chance. I did take out the first season, and watched the first episode - horrible - and the last one to see if things had improved. Then I returned it to the library. This Doctor Who will not survive unless there are 1) a cull of the companions and 2) a new writer or writers. Sorry, I have been a Dr. Who fan for years, but this newest series seems to be aimed at pre-teens. I doubt whether it will last the 4 years of this doctor.
