I think I was almost in a trance while I was reading this book. It is historical fiction but could also be categorized as travel/adventure. There is great insight into the time frame and societal roles of the pioneers(especially women) in the eastern U.S. in the 1800's. These 4 sisters are all strong characters, each in their own way and look out for each other in ways quite above and beyond what most people would do now. The lack of support system makes the immediate family ties that much more important then. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in white captives of Native Americans, pioneers, survival means and also a tiny bit of romance.
