Aptly titled, the 8th movie by Quinton Tarantino, provides an intriguing atmosphere & some tense & interesting character dynamics. The score roars throughout & the main theme matches the building tone of the plot. Some time is spent amidst the vista of harsh winter on rugged terrain. Though, most of the story takes place in interiors: a stagecoach, a barn & a cabin - very realistic seeming set design that immersed me in the post Civil War time period of the movie. It is in these places that characters interact- for better or worse- & their histories are revealed. I enjoyed how the script interweaved some of their backstories together. I also liked the shots from a bird’s eye view, looking down on the characters, through rafters, & deep focus following a character’s perspective. Plus, a subtle & literal use of Chekhov’s gun. If I had to criticize one major thing, it would be a hope for a bit more heart over Tarantino’s signature dramatization of violence. Also, Jennifer Jason Leigh’s portrayal of her character was brilliant & layered. This movie swells with mystery, building up to an enthralling climax. I would recommend for fans of Westerns and/or character/dialogue-driven movies. 3.5/5 stars. @reviewperson of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
