Up for a Gateway award! This is a touching story about a boy growing up in the south during the civil rights movements of the 1960's. The main character, Rodney, becomes best fiends with an African American boy in the neighborhood despite his father's racist views. However, as the boys enter high school, Rodney has trouble when his sister becomes more involved with this boy than "just friends". This is a story that highlights the racism that can exist in any of us, whether we want it to or not. I thought the author did a great job of making the reader feel the struggles and regret he faced throughout the story.
