I'm in love with this book. When I started it, I couldn't put it down, and when I had to put it down, I was itching to pick it back up again.

"The Candle and the Flame" is YA historical fantasy set in a city along the Silk Road. The city is large and bustling and diverse, and the presence of the djinn is prevalent throughout the city. When a prominent djinn is murdered, our heroine, Fatima, undergoes a personal transformation in ways both subtle and dramatic.

While the book's synopsis leads the reader to believe the novel centers around Fatima, it's more of an ensemble cast with Fatima, her sister Sunaina, and the princess Bhavya at its heart. It's lighter on the action, but there's plenty of magic, mystery, and intrigue to go around. The characters are compelling and intriguing, and the setting is lush and beautiful. While it's not perfect, it's an excellent read!

The descriptions and language in this book were beautiful! I really enjoyed the magical elements woven into the story, the importance of names in creating identities, and the strong, female characters that existed in this world... especially Fatima Ghazala and the Maharani.
