Do you know what a shem is? First word means "truth". The second means "death".
So, according to myth, they're the "words of power" which, when placed in the mouth of a golem, give it life.
You stop him, or we will.
-You don't know Morse.
He's an idealist.
-I'm sure we all are.
Maybe once, Councillor. Now you're just a villain.
Sea sand, most likely, due to the roundness of the particles.
Construction site's no place for small boys with soft hands and clean shirts. It's dirty work. Dangerous work. Man's work. Accidents happen.
-That sounds like a threat.
Advice, son. You ever seen a shovel fight? That's how navvies used to settle their differences on site. I once seen two brothers go at each other with shovels. 20 minutes, it lasted. Hell of a thing.
You don't owe me anything, but I don't owe him anything either. Certainly not loyalty. He's not my guv'nor, never will be. You know, there is a line. I just hope that you're on the right side of it.

Win's old man worked the docks. Limehouse Basin. Thought I might not be too welcome, being a young copper, but he was a straight go. The sky was pink and pearl, band playing. Geraldo, I think it was, for us. The crowd parted for the briefest moment and There she was, pretty as a picture. Surrounded by all these dashing types, desperate to light her cigarette. Next thing, I'd crossed the lawn, I was standing beside her. "Have you come to save me?" She said. "Yes", I said "I rather think I have." And now I can't.
You keep the house.
- I don't want it. Any more than I wanted the oven or clothes, or a holiday.
Then what do you want, Winifred?
-I wanted my husband back. The man I married. I don't want the house and I don't want the money. God knows what you had to do to get it. It was never about the money. We've been without before. It didn't matter. It never mattered. We had each other.
We are not friends, Councillor nor, I'm very happy to say, are we ever likely to be.

Ref. to Ronan Point, a 22-storey tower block, East London, which partly collapsed on 16 May 1968, only two months after it had opened (per wiki.)

t's the start of a new era. In Oxford, it's out with the old and in with the new. As Councillor Clive Burkitt, in charge of the planning and housing department, welcomes the first tenant to Cranmer House, one of three tower blocks at Oxford's new Martyrs' Field development. A stunning feat of modern engineering, changing the Oxford skyline forever.
Memoirs Of A What was it, Morse?
- Voluptuary.
Voluptuary. Racy go for a numbers man, I'd have thought.
--I'm writing a paper on Edwardian erotica. It's very popular.
Well-thumbed, I'm sure. I'm more of a Holly Martins man myself.
What happened?
-What happened is immaterial for the moment. All that matters now is the preservation of life.
I'm sorry. I made a mess of things. I love you.
-Sorry was all I wanted.
I know. I've loved you too long to stop now. I should've said it sooner.

You're a good man, Fred. Same as my old man. He did nearly 30 years in a blue uniform. Two months shy of his pension, going after a couple of safe-crackers, he went through a skylight. Fell 35 feet on the concrete and broke his back. Know what he got for his trouble? A watch and a chain. The watch stopped working after a fortnight. And six months later, so did he. I swore on his grave, if I was going to risk my life for this job, I was going to get more out of it than just a poxy watch and chain. You deserve no different.
After the way they've treated you? I wouldn't treat a dog like that.
Adulterous wife. Rich, married lover. But the most telling was Miss Ling's reply. She told the wife she should pass herself off as a widow because, how did it go, Sergeant? Because "Death is infinitely more respectable than adultery," it comes with fewer awkward questions."
It was wicked what she did. Poking her nose into other people's affairs. And you're no different.

Love should be brave, don't you think? Even if it doesn't last.
You want to crack this thing, it's down to us.
-I told you, there is no us. I'm just gonna keep my head down, my nose clean, and wait for the winds to change.
Since when do you value your neck so high?
Everyone else deserves a chance why should I be so different?
- Because you are.
What if I don't want to be? I mean, that's what it's about, isn't it? Having someone to come home to. I wouldn't know.
-Look just watch your back here. For old time's sake. I mean it. Trust no bugger. Even your closest.
Could have been done with any number of pointed instruments.
-Such as?
Oh, a spiked bayonet, medieval misericord, rondel dagger, the Japanese sai.
The only thing one can pronounce with any certainty at this juncture is that he came to a sticky end.
I wasn't on duty.
-It shouldn't matter.
A copper's a copper, first, last and always.

Bill Clinton? He was in the Oxford rugby team in 1969 as well:

I spoke to a Rhodes scholar that Bura played rugby with, name of Clinton.
You're not dressed.
- I'm going to cry off. Bit of a head.
Nonsense. Bit of fresh air, put some colour in your cheeks, do you good.
- Curling up with a good book will do me better.
I thought you were at the Section House?
-I'm just a bit long in the tooth for rugby songs and bare backsides in the hallway. I need my own four walls.
She landed on her feet, then.
-Landed on something.
What's upset you?
-I don't think I've been a very good wife.
No man ever had a better.
People do despair, Morse.
-You don't say.
"Slaughter horse and worry about it." Crossword clue. I don't suppose?
- Carnage.
No, erm, what happened?
-She decided that a war was preferable to my company. Which probably tells you all you need to know about me. She was a photo-journalist. Vietnam.
Afraid I can't compete with that.
-It's not a competition.

How long had you been married?
-Two years. After his first wife died. We met at St Martin's, he was my tutor.
All was well between you and your husband, Mrs Gidby?
-He had his dark days. I loved him but it's not easy stepping into a dead woman's shoes.
Well, sometimes you've got to throw a stone into the pool, stir the silt.
-And never mind who gets hurt? They're children. If something happens...

They've not been taken by anyone. They're not in any danger. It's not the first time a child has run away from home. We'll circulate some photographs and a description. They can't have got far. We will find them.
-You'd better.
He was good at everything. Even cruelty.
She took my happiness.
I thought grown-ups were meant to be grown up.
-They are, usually.
But not her. She's so involved in her own adult mess ...
Humbolt's car's a cut and shut, which is two cars welded together.

Come to show us how it's done, have you? Say there is more to it. Nine times out of ten these things are the spouse.
-This isn't robbery. You can't just find the first likely prospect and fit them up for it.
I was a boy when Alcock and Brown crossed the Atlantic. Everybody said that couldn't be done. 50 years on, it's the moon. Man's reach, Thursday.
-All's well, sir?
A sobering thing to discover so late in life that one is considered a fool.
-Not you, sir.
Yes, I'm under no illusion. I'm a figure of ridicule to be openly mocked and scorned.
Sod it! I'm going home.
Things are not what they were, for any of us. Perhaps at the time when one doesn't always appreciate one's good fortune, but I'm sure Inspector Thursday will be very pleased to have you back. As indeed, albeit at one remove, am I.
I hope you're a more convincing liar when it matters. Your life may depend on it.

Those who take and them that get taken. I know what side I'm on.
-So do I. I always have done. It slipped my mind. I thought I was owed. I was wrong. This job doesn't owe me anything.
Each of us can have anything we want, 'anything in the world. But so often we deny ourselves, because we don't think we deserve it.'
Everyone thinks I have the perfect life. I suppose looking at it from the outside I do. Perfect marriage. Perfect husband. Perfect children. Perfect house. But every morning I wake up, I just want to scream.
I thought we were here to get to the truth of what happened!
-No. You're here to follow my orders.
Guv'nor's rated you exhibits officer. And if I were you, I'd keep my head down.
You're not his blue-eyed boy right now.
But why, you may ask, should anybody want to go to the Moon? That I will tell you. The reason is that behind the Moon there lies the most wonderful, beautiful, never-to-be-forgotten garden the mind can think of.

It's a balance of probabilities. You go with your gut. What's important is types like that get put away.
-And if we've got to nudge the jukebox to get the penny to fall?
We found your photographs. Children. Young girls in not much more than the altogether.
-That's art. I'm interested in photography.
You're interested in something.
- Those are historical images. They were taken by the Reverend Charles Dodgson. Lewis Carroll? The man who wrote Alice In Wonderland? Prince Albert and Queen Victoria were great collectors of child nudes.
Freaks? No, hobbyists. Men of a like aesthetic bent.
-Men? You're not a man. You're not a man's arse.
Some of 'em are just born under a bad sign. All the welfare in the world won't save 'em.
-Maybe, but 13's a bit young to be written off, don't you think?

Endeavor Season 7 is playing right now February 2020 in the UK. Hopefully we will get the series when there season is over. You get to see a bit of the history of "cops" in the UK and probably similar to hear in the USA. Corruption and use of guns changes as the series goes on. I see the parallels in USA police behavior, both the evil and the angelic. Great acting. Wonderful cast of repeat characters and of visiting characters.

This 6th season is absolutely terrific. My emotions went up and down like a roller-coaster. I don't want this series to end.

This continues to be a great series. I hope there will be a season 7.

I was a bit disappointed in the DVD. It said it was the UK version, but in fact it was the PBS Mystery version. I happened by chance to see the UK version of the first episode on YouTube shortly after it was broadcast there. A whole line of character development for Mr Bright has been left out in the PBS version and I was really sad not to see it. One of the main threads of this season is how the characters deal with being broken apart after the last season.

I'm also sure something was cut out of the last episode, because it didn't really seem to make sense in a few spots.

Despite the opera, the glorious theme music, the triumph of British geography and ancient architecture, the writing here blows. Morse is excellent. The actors are all trying their best but they cannot overcome poor writing. Doesn't help that the first two episodes involve child abuse. There seems to be some hidden agenda here - some ideology being spammed at the cost of the writing. Not having it. No, thanks. Will return to old Morse instead.

love this series....goddam brits only put up 3 episodes?...wish they'd learn that a "season" is a LOT more than that

1969 culture, macho more important than honesty, Morse still struggles for truth.

Set in 1969 with Apollo 11 mission on the telly etc. the old gang, less the enigmatic WPC Trewlove (transferred to Scotland Yard,) was scattered to new posts after closure of the Cowley Station in S5. With purposeful prodding by the future Chief Superintendent Strange, a morose Morse who now sported a Tom Selleck mustache reunited with Thursday, DeBryn and Bright to fight prevailing crimes along with a cold case that was personal to them all.

-Bill Clinton mentioned? See "Quotes."

I liked the last episode the best, but don't want to spoil the ending. Having loved Morse forever, Endeavour is a great way to still have the character. Highly recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby
