Lu is a U.S. citizen immigrated from Argentina and living in 1970's Alabama shortly after the integration of schools. Though she's an excellent student, sixth grade is proving to be a challenge socially and at home. She's in the middle on so many things! Where she sits in the class, who she's friends with, if she wants to be just friends or more with Sam, and if she should challenge her parents and go out for the track team. As an immigrant she feels like she needs to play it safe, but she knows in her gut what's right and wrong and proves she's really brave after all. This book is for readers who like a diverse cast of characters, a coming of age tale, and a little bit of history.

Lu wants so much to get along with everyone, but that is hard to do in 1970's Alabama where racial strife is at high she has to make some some tough choices to stand up for what she believes is right.
