I'm in the minority on this one, but I think this sequel is better than the first movie. Carpenter's taking a satirical jab at La La land and it's many absurdities and grotesqueness. The movie isn't meant to be taken seriously- including the effects ( which weren't cutting edge even at the time it was made ).

I'll preface this with saying that I'm a big fan of John Carpenter and of "Escape from New York." Carpenter and star Kurt Russell did some great films together, including "The Thing" and "Big Trouble in Little China." Re-teaming years after the original, they have both lost a step or six. Russell is back as super criminal Snake Plissken and is tasked with another impossible mission: break into the lawless wasteland that is L.A. (some things never change, amiright?) and find the President's daughter. As a bad action movie, it's enjoyable enough, although many of the special effects have dated badly. But because it's Carpenter and Russell, I expected better and couldn't help but unfavorably compare it with the first film. The supporting cast includes Steve Buscemi, Peter Fonda, Pam Grier, Stacy Keach, and Cliff Robertson as the President. The very 90s soundtrack leans heavily on the ungodly metal/industrial hybrid that corrupted our airwaves for a short period of time (White Zombie, Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills). If you need brainless entertainment though, this is it.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”
