A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte by Georges Seurat is one of the great paintings of the world, and in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, book writer James Lapine and composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim bring a story based on the work brilliantly to life. While the painting depicts people gathered on an island in the Seine, the musical goes beyond simply describing their lives. It is an exploration of art, of love, of commitment. Seurat connected dots to create images; Lapine and Sondheim use connection as the heart of all our relationships. Winner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Filmed back in 1985 before a live audience - "Sunday In The Park With George" is a 2-hour-26-minute TV adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name.

This play's story is loosely based on the life and paintings of famed French artist, Georges Seurat. The music and lyrics were composed by Stephen Sondheim. Its costumes and set designs each won a Tony Award.

Initially set in the year 1884 - This production certainly had its fair share of interesting and amusing moments.

But, unfortunately - I found actress/singer, Bernadette Peters (in a leading role), as Dot/Marie, to be downright annoying.

GOOD 1985 American Playhouse release of interesting Broadway musical loosely based on life of French painter Seurat, who initiated Neo-impressionism. A bit long, but I did watch it over two evenings.

Though somewhat dated (1986) this imaginative musical wonderfully written (Sondheim) and performed by the unflagging and talented Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, is a treat. Cast also includes a very young Brent Spinner (Data from Star Trek). Worth the effort and provides a somewhat understandable explanation of George Seurat's Impressionist work.
