This volume is actually a compilation of the three books in a trilogy about Chloe King: The Fallen, The Stolen, and The Chosen. The first book, The Fallen, introduces us to Chloe, who discovers she has secret powers when she falls from the top of Coit Tower in San Francisco - and lives. By the end of the book we learn that she survived because she is actually a member of a secret race of cat people. I mean, it's right there in the compilation title - "Nine Lives" - so it didn't come as a surprise to me. Later we learn more about the Mai (the cat people) and Chloe's place in their world. Suffice to say that there's a secret society of assassins that want nothing her dead; matters are complicated when she and the son of the head of the assassins fall in love.

And even though the books are about cat people and assassins, at its heart this is a story about a teenage girl dealing with being a teenager, hating how everything is changing and wishing she could go back to being a little girl again.

Chloe can be a brat sometimes, she doesn't always treat her friends or her mom well. Some of the other characters are a bit two-dimensional. And the book is in serious need of a copy editor. But as an example of young adult cat person teen angst romance and adventure, it's not bad.

Good read for teens, but feels unfinished.
