Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption: 5 stars
Apt Pupil: 4-4.5 stars
The Body: 3 stars. I enjoyed the movie Stand By Me which is based off this story, so I was surprised that I liked this least of the bunch.
The Breathing method: 4 stars

Other than Apt Pupil (which I found very disturbing), the short stories in this collection are extremely good. Two of them were produced into very successful and memorable films (The body-> Stand By Me , Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption -> The Shawshank Redemption) and as usually is the case, the original stories are far better than their Hollywood versions.

Every story in this book is so interesting, I've recommended this book to my friends and family. A must read!

I read these out of order because I knew that I wasn’t going to like Apt Pupil very much and I wanted to get it over with soonest. I admire the skill of the plot and the psychology of these two twisted souls feeding off of each other, but it was more sickening than enjoyable (I’m hoping that’s what King wanted). The other three stories I liked a lot more. The Breathing Method is more my kind of weird – a spooky tale within the great framework of the “gentlemen’s story club.” I knew that I would love The Body (though I think I like the movie better - sacrilege!) and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. They have a kind of nostalgia that I love, and I became so attached to the characters.

I only checked this book out to read the novella "The Body" based on my favorite movie of all time, Stand By Me. The details were really good, and I liked the whole story overall.

I always loved Stephen King's short stories. This batch is definitely something to check out. My favorites are Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body. OMG, absolutely LOVED Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Its so realistically written and the plot just flows along so smoothly, the tone is great and the main characters felt so real, I loved them. I saw the movie based on 'The Body' before reading the story but it did not stop me from enjoying it. It goes deeper into the boys' lives than the movie does and amazingly written from a teenager's point of view. Overall, a great short story collection.

At the risk of sounding like a lunatic—or offending the author—I find much of King’s work to be rather charming. My favorite thing about his books isn’t the horror aspect (though I consider it a definite plus). The reason I come back to King is his portrayal of the characters he writes about—their friendships and mortal enemies, loves/hates, personal demons, and journeys.
