In this unforgettable portrait of the early life of the Great Emancipator, young Mr. Lincoln, after teaching himself law, has barely started practicing when an Independence Day celebration ends with a stabbing. Abe first stops a lynch mob from killing brothers Matt and Adam Clay, and then defends them against a seasoned prosecutor and his crafty adviser. As presented here, Lincoln is a strong but peaceful frontier democrat, his quiet, awkward, folksy demeanor the outward manifestation of a deep humility, and a wise sadness at human folly. His awareness that his attempts to reconcile opposing forces--despite the occasional temporary victory--are doomed but necessary, hint at the character that will respond to the destiny that awaits him.

Opinion

From Library Staff

John Ford's classic drama stars the legendary Henry Fonda as one of our most legendary leaders. This biopic looks at Lincoln's early years before he was tasked with piecing back together a torn-apart country, but it's a moving portrait of a young man who was destined for greatness.

One of director John Ford's masterpiece films, this gives us Abraham Lincoln as a young man in the Illinois frontier over a few years, from his decision to go into the law to a murder trial he participates in. Henry Fonda is perfectly cast as the plain spoken principled Lincoln, given to storytelling, taking a stand on a moral issue, and basic decency. Ford's direction paces the story well, and even blends in some humour, including a play on a character's name that I'm surprised passed by the censors of the time. The DVD edition, from the Criterion label, has a good number of extras well worth seeing.

Young Mr. Lincoln affords one to see Henry Fonda is one of his most famous roles as Lincoln. The Great Film Director John Ford directed the film and pulled together a wonderful cast. The script is topnotch and a movie that is perfect for the whole family. Probably one of top ten films of John Ford and an American Film Treasure!

A humble, earthy bio-drama from John Ford, starring Henry Fonda (who I felt was spot-on as a choice for the role) with a surprisingly decent fake nose for '39, and a young Ward Bond as the hooligan Jack Cass (priceless). A really sweet classic. (Bonus disc's BBC pre-war biopic of Ford and talk show interview with Fonda is superb; it nearly eclipses the feature. Invaluable for any admirer of these icons.)

Movie filmed in 1939. Henry Fonda is a young pre-president Lincoln. A good job at bringing the personality and well known character of Abe to the screen. A lot of annoying background music. But for anyone interested in who he was prior to being president and while a young and very passionate lawyer, this is a great movie. Very nostalgic to watch a movie from so long ago. The pace is completely different from all that we now experience in movies.

Abe Lincoln (cross-examining J. Palmer Cass): "...Your name's 'J. Palmer Cass.' " John Palmer Cass: "Yeah." Abe Lincoln: "What's the 'J' stand for?" John Palmer Cass: "John." Abe Lincoln: "Anybody ever call ya Jack?" John Palmer Cass: "Yeah." Abe Lincoln: "Why 'J. Palmer Cass?' Why not 'John P. Cass'?" John Palmer Cass: "Well, I..." Abe Lincoln: "Has 'J. Palmer Cass' anything to conceal?" John Palmer Cass: "No!" Abe Lincoln: "Then whattya part your name in the middle for?" John Palmer Cass: "I got a right to call myself anything I please... long as it's my own name!" Abe Lincoln: "Well... if it's all the same to you, I'll just call ya Jack Cass." (crowd roars)
