I don’t know exactly when Italian films began using location sound, but after Mussolini established Cinna Cità, all Italian films were dubbed so the fascist government could have the actors and actresses say exactly what they wanted them to say. The practice of dubbing by the actors themselves lasted until not that long ago. Sidney Hollister

I never would've believed tough guy Burt Lancaster starred in an 1860s period piece as a Sicilian aristocrat, but he pulls it off remarkably well. His overdubbed voice takes a little getting used to, but aside from that, his performance is flawless. A beautiful film from Visconti. Claudia Cardinale was a radiant beauty, too.

A magnificient movie. Burt Lancaster's performance is abosulely great and convincing. Don't miss "Atlantic City", staring Lancaster and Susan Sarandon.

Father Pirrone: "Good morning, Excellency." Prince Don Fabrizio Salina: "Good morning, Father." Father Pirrone: "Is your Excellency here for confession?" Prince Don Fabrizio Salina: "Confession? It's not Saturday." Father Pirrone: "Listen to me. Come to confession." Prince Don Fabrizio Salina: "There's no need. You know it all already." Father Pirrone: "The power of confession lies not only in telling our sins, but in repentance." Prince Don Fabrizio Salina: "I know! What would you have of me? I'm a vigorous man. I can't find satisfaction with a woman who crosses herself in bed before every embrace, and can only say "Gesummaria" afterwards. I've had seven children with her, and I've never seen her navel! Is that right? I ask you. She's the sinner!"

Prince Don Fabrizio Salina: "Love? Of course. Flames for a year, followed by ashes for thirty. I know what love is."

Prince Don Fabrizio Salina: "We were the leopards, the lions. Those who take our place will be jackals, hyenas. And all of us -- leopards, lions, jackals and sheep -- we'll go on thinking ourselves the salt of the Earth."
